OUR LOS ANGELES FAMILY

MANUFACTURING TO ORGANIC STANDARDS

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is one of organic fibers' leading textile processing standards. The Global Organic Latex Standard  (GOLS) is a materials and processing standard for organic and finished latex foam. These standards define worldwide recognized requirements that certify the organic status of textiles and latex, from harvesting the raw materials through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing. GOTS and GOLS are standards endorsed by the USDA’s National Organic Program.

Few of the hundreds of mattress brands in the U.S. operate GOTS-certified production facilities. Our Avocado factory in Los Angeles is one of these select few (CU863637), meeting the rigorous standards as certified by Control Union® to manufacture certified organic products.

ORGANIC FOR EVERYONE

ORGANIC FOR
EVERYONE

Organic standards aren't just aimed at helping consumers. They consider the health impacts on farmer workers and the environment, too. The end goal of our certified organic products is to make something that's better for you and better for the planet.

GLOBAL ORGANIC LATEX STANDARD (GOLS)

Our 175,000-square-foot facility in Los Angeles is also certified by Control Union® to manufacture materials under the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS). To achieve GOLS certification, a product must contain more than 95% of certified organic raw material of the total weight. The GOLS standard features permissible limits for harmful substances, emission test requirements, and polymer and filler percentages. By using transaction certificates in the supply chain, we establish traceability from the plantation to the final product.

HIGHER STANDARDS

WHAT ORGANIC MEANS

GOTS and GOLS are recognized as the world's leading processing standard for textiles made from organic fibers and organic latex. The standards cover the processing, manufacturing, packaging, labeling, trading, and distribution of all textiles and latex foams made from certified organic natural fibers.

ENVIRONMENTAL CRITERIA

ENVIRONMENTAL CRITERIA

We do our best to ensure what comes through our doors meets stringent requirements. We're committed to avoiding the use of toxic heavy metals, formaldehyde, aromatic solvents, functional nano particles, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), or their enzymes, as well as no chlorine bleaching, no Azo dyes that release carcinogenic amine compounds, and no phthalates or PVCs.

ENVIRONMENTAL POLICIES

PROJECT ZERO WASTE

Avocado is always seeking innovative ways to be more sustainable — while never compromising the luxury feel of our products. From materials to manufacturing and shipping, we understand that every small decision contributes to our larger impact. Implementing sustainable, zero-waste practices is essential if we want to make meaningful strides in the fight against climate change. In 2022, by being intentional about our materials and manufacturing, we expanded our production facility footprint from two to five while still increasing the amount of waste we diverted from landfills by 9%, achieving an overall waste diversion rate of 78%. Our goal is at least an 80% diversion rate. Read more about Project Zero Waste.

SOCIAL CRITERIA

SOCIAL CRITERIA

GOTS and GOLS organic certifications outline social criteria based on the key norms of the International Labor Organization (ILO). Simply put, it means to provide fair pay and safe working conditions, while saying "no" to discrimination and child labor. In fact, our valued production teams are paid living wages and provided progressive and comprehensive benefits, including family healthcare and three weeks of paid vacation.

QUALITY ASSURANCE

QUALITY ASSURANCE

Our GOTS and GOLS organic certifications extend to our supply chain and use a dual system to check compliance with relevant criteria consisting of on-site auditing and residue testing.

WHOLE SYSTEM APPROACH

WHOLE SYSTEM APPROACH

We believe organic is a whole system approach to farming and food production. It must recognize the close interrelationships between all parts of the production system from the soil to you, the buyer. Agricultural principles are used to produce food of high quality in sufficient quantity and to work within natural systems and cycles throughout all levels from the soil to plants and animals. That's why the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) recognizes the Global Organic Textile Standard.

OUR LARGER Environmental VISION

OUR LARGER VISION

GOTS and GOLS organic certifications are important and significant. But our larger vision is as aspirational as it is urgent and action-oriented: to be one of the most sustainable companies on the planet. This is just the beginning. We will continue to strive for more.
