AVOCADO RECALLS COTTON MATTRESS PAD PROTECTOR

To comply with the Federal Mattress Pad Flammability Standard.

Name of Product: Avocado Cotton Mattress Pad Protector. This voluntary recall involves all Avocado Cotton Mattress Pad Protectors sold between approximately January 17, 2019, through March 11, 2024.

Hazard: The recalled Avocado Cotton Mattress Pad Protector fails to meet the mandatory federal flammability standard for mattress pads, posing a fire hazard. Although there have been no incidents or injuries, out of an abundance of caution, please stop using your Avocado Cotton Mattress Pad Protector. 

How is Avocado making this right? After successfully completing the online registration, Avocado will ship you a free replacement protector made with organic cotton sateen fabric, organic cotton canvas backing, and organic wool batting. There is no charge for handling and shipping of the replacement.

  • WHAT IS THE REGULATION?

    The U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission, Requirements for Mattresses and Mattress Pads 16 C.F.R. Part 1632. This standard reduces the risks of death, personal injury, and property damage associated with fires that result from the ignition of mattresses by cigarettes. The standard provides a test to determine the ignition resistance of a mattress. It defines a mattress pad as: "a thin, flat mat or cushion and/or ticking filled with resilient material for use on top of a mattress. This definition excludes convoluted foam pads that are not totally encased in ticking." 

  • WHAT IS THE ISSUE?

    The Cotton Mattress Pad Protector failed the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission's flammability testing for cigarette ignition resistance.

  • WHAT IS THE REPLACEMENT PRODUCT?

    The new Mattress Pad Protector is a GOTS-certified product, quilted with reinforced edges, a gentle-fit cotton pocket, and an elastic perimeter. It is made with organic cotton sateen fabric, canvas backing, and wool batting. The new construction meets flammability standards without the use of any added fire retarding chemicals. It is available in a standard 16-inch pocket and a deep 22-inch pocket version. It is the same quality as the original. There is no charge for this replacement product.

  • IS THE REPLACEMENT PRODUCT FREE OF HARMFUL CHEMICALS?

    The new Mattress Pad Protector is a GOTS-certified product (CU867637). The wool is certified to the Responsible Wool Standard. It is certified to MADE SAFE standards and meets emissions standards set by Greenguard Gold from UL. It has been tested and passed the Requirements for Mattresses and Mattress Pads 16 C.F.R. Part 1632.

  • WHAT IF I HAVE DISCARDED OR LOST MY PROTECTOR?

    To reduce the risk identified in the announcement of this voluntary recall, a free replacement is only provided to customers in possession of the mattress protector.

  • CAN I GET A REPLACEMENT AT A RETAIL LOCATION?

    No, all submissions for replacement must be completed using this online web form.

  • ARE REFUNDS AVAILABLE?

    No. We are pleased to offer a free replacement. Shipping and handling are also free.

  • CAN I CONTINUE TO USE MY MATTRESS PAD PROTECTOR?

    No. We are asking all of our customers to stop using their mattress pads and contact us immediately for a free replacement.

  • WHAT IF I HAVE MORE THAN ONE PROTECTOR?

    Please submit the form once for each replacement required.

  • WHAT PROCESS IS REQUIRED?

    Complete the registration form on this page. After completing your contact information, you will be guided through the following steps: First, using a dark permanent marker, write RECALLED on each protector, your first and last name initials, and the date the photo was taken. Second, cut the cotton protector in half. Third, you must take a photo of the cut cotton mattress pad showing the words RECALLED, your initials, and the date clearly visible. After you complete the form submission, a confirmation page will be displayed.
